Sustainable forest farming for thriving comunities
We believe in the power of community to help make our global vision a reality, so join us in planting the forests of the future
The Green Island Growth Alliance Mission
Beyond Timber - Creating New Livelihood Opportunities
We actively empower forest farming communities to thrive by investing in organic value chains and providing open market access. Our commitment to adaptive ecosystem regeneration and forest-friendly cultivation drives generational change and long-term sustainability.
GIGA's Green Development Programs
- Community-Lead Regenerative Agroforestry: These initiatives aim to revitalize marginal landscapes by promoting biodiversity and protecting the remaining forest habitats of various species.
- Supporting Livelihoods: We focus on creating sustainable non-timber agroforestry opportunities to ensure livelihoods, food security, and prosperity for marginalized forest communities.
- Improved Climate Resilience: To prepare forest communities effectively through knowledge sharing and training in agricultural practices that reduce their risk from future climate impacts.
GIGAs Program Themes 2025/26
- Transformative non-timber, community agroforestry partnerships
- Sustainable collection, processing and marketing of forest-friendly products
- Community bamboo and biochar production for regenerative agroforestry
- Mangrove aqua-silviculture for seafood offtakes' and estuarine rehabilitation
Cultivating Excellence: Soil improvment & Propagation
- Forest stewardship training and empowerment
- Soil fertility development & Terra preta production
- Forest seed collecting & seed banking,
- Air-layering & grafting for stronger saplings
IMRAS - Integrated Mangrove Regenerative Aqua-Silviculture
This program includes multiple layers of adaptive aqua-forestry, serving as both an economic development platform and a strategy for climate impact defence. The goal is to generate sustainable livelihoods while enhancing coastal communities’ preparedness for future climate challenges.
Our Projects
Traditional Forest Food Security
Agroforestry, or "agriculture with trees," is an integrated approach combining crops, livestock, and forest trees in various configurations, from planting trees on farms, cultivating crops within forests or creating woodland buffer zones around communities. This approach amplifies the benefits of forest cover and permaculture by leveraging the ability of trees to sequester carbon, harvest and retain groundwater, and create nutrient-dense, humus-rich topsoil, that fosters microbial life and boosts biodiversity.
MIR - Marine Interface Restoration
Community-driven restoration of coastal ecosystems for seafood harvesting creates adaptive livelihoods through regenerative mangrove aquaculture and seaweed farming. This approach provides sustainable income sources while enhancing offshore fisheries. By combining eco-entrepreneurship with climate resilience, it empowers local communities to thrive and protect their coastal environments.
Rapid Response Bamboo Reforestation
Encouraging farmers to integrate bamboo cultivation with eco-friendly livestock and crops can lead to significant ecological benefits. Bamboo creates a protective canopy that improves soil quality and offers a vital habitat for biodiversity conservation. Selective bamboo harvesting is a highly versatile and profitable practice, offering timber, edible shoots, and raw materials for industry while being highly renewable. Bamboo agroforestry generates new income streams for forest farmers, reducing their reliance on mono-crop farming, and fostering resilience in both environmental and economic aspects.
Fresh water Swamp Regeneration
The Freshwater Swamp Reforestation Program is designed to address erosion and river sedimentation resulting from deforestation, mining and cattle grazing. This initiative aims to rehabilitate degraded freshwater ecosystems, enhancing the livelihoods of the local community through the establishment of feedlots for cattle containment to maximise forest growth and develop community aquaculture enclosures. To foster sustainable and productive aquatic environments that support local communities and minimize the ecological footprint of agricultural activities.
The Green Island Growth Alliance - Vision
Our agroecological approaches are inspired by the symbiotic balance within the forest ecosystem, and how traditional communities have sustainably utilized their natural resources.
Agroecology integrates local forest insights with scientific study, to enhance the cyclical exchanges between plants, animals, and humans within the forest ecosystem. This approach cultivates resilient livelihoods and rejuvenates marginal landscapes.
